The national emblem of Mexico depicting a Mexican golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus devouring a snake above a half-wreath of oak and laurel below and the legend forming the upper semicircle. Portrait of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla facing with vertical value at left. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811) was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence. He was born on May 8, 1753, in Corralejo, Guanajuato, Mexico. Hidalgo studied in a Jesuit college and became a priest in 1778. He was appointed the parish priest of Dolores in 1803, where he became involved in politics and social justice issues. He was particularly concerned with the treatment of the indigenous people and the poor. On September 16, 1810, Hidalgo delivered his famous "Cry of Dolores," a speech calling for the end of Spanish rule in Mexico and the establishment of a Mexican republic. This speech marked the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence. Hidalgo's leadership was instrumental in the early stages of the war, and he achieved several victories against the Spanish forces. However, he was captured and executed on July 30, 1811, by the Spanish authorities. His execution did not bring an end to the Mexican War of Independence, which continued until 1821, but his legacy as a symbol of Mexican independence and social justice lives on. He is celebrated every year on September 16th, which is Mexico's Independence Day.
